Dock Intake Coordinator

Responsibilities

  • During sale days the Dock Intake Coordinator oversees and assists the dock sales staff, paid and volunteers, in handling donations from the public, getting donations taken to the sorting area and loading merchandise purchased by customers.
  • Primary focus is to determine, based on guidance from the Sales Manager, whether donations are satisfactory for resale at Kiwanis Thrift Sale before taking possession of them from the public and, if not, rejecting them and informing the contributor why.
  • During non-sale days the Dock Intake Coordinator will be responsible for moving donations from the outdoor drop-off enclosure to the sorting area to be processed, assisting other paid staff on pick-ups, loading and/or unloading of vehicles and restocking of the sale floor.

Duties

  • Remove items from the outdoor drop-off enclosure every morning, taking satisfactory items to the sorting area and unsatisfactory ones to the dumpster.
  • Ensure the area around the dock and outdoor enclosure is cleaned every day. Use Kiwanis vehicles to move the unsatisfactory items and other trash to the dumpster. 
  • Ensure all tubs of donations are taken to the sorting area.
  • Relate to customers and the public in a courteous manner and meet customer service expectations.
  • Ensure all items purchased by customers are placed in the holding area away from the dock doors and out of fire lanes.
  • Make sure the dock is clean and ready for the next sale day.
  • Inform Sales Manager of any issues related to donations or loading process on sale days.
  • Unload and stage merchandise and ensure merchandise is not in the fire lanes.
  • Develop knowledge of sorting and the ability to price merchandise that will go on the sales floor.
  • Assists the Facilities Coordinator with other tasks as assigned by the Sales Manager.

Qualifications

  • Ability to lift 50+ pounds, which could be anything from furniture to boxes, from inside of houses, businesses, warehouses, etc. up and down stairs to Kiwanis vehicles.
  • Ability to unload and load furniture and merchandise from Kiwanis and public vehicles.
  • Ability to breakdown cardboard boxes, broken furniture and throw trash/garbage out when required.
  • Ability to move plastic and wooden pallets using the various items of equipment from jacks to battery powered lift.
  • Ability to handle steel used in making storage racks or shelving.
  • Possess a valid Michigan Driver's License (operator's license) and a good driving record that is sufficient to qualify as a permitted driver under Kiwanis insurance standards.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to coordinate tasks and available resources to achieve objectives.
  • Possess good verbal, written and internet communication skills.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks and maintain work effort.
